November 12-20, 2016 is National Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week which is held annually the week before Thanksgiving. The holidays can be particularly hard for homeless individuals. Many may suffer from depression, PTSD, and anxiety while dealing with such a traumatic experience.More than 600,000 people in the U.S. are homeless at any given time. Many are forced to live in the streets losing their homes, families, friends communities, routines and their sense of safety. Statistics show that a quarter of the homeless people in the United States are young children.During November, we challenge you to participate in a Homelessness Awareness act. If you are organizing your own event, here are some questions to consider:

  • What is our community goal for H&H week?
  • How many and which events should we plan for?
  • What individuals or organizations should we partner with in the community/on campus?
  • How many organizers do we need?
  • When should the events take place?
  • Who should handle publicity?

If you are looking for somewhere to volunteer CCC is looking for volunteers to help with the breakfast program. If you are interested you can contact the Community Crossroads Center at 252-752-0829 for more information.
