The youth group, “Salt and Light," from First Christian Church held their second annual “Out of the Box” event on May 5th of 2017. It was very inspiring for us at Community Crossroads Center to see so many youth take on the task of helping us care for those that have fallen on hard times and are less fortunate than many of us. This also says a great deal about the leadership at First Christian. To be able to inspire that many youth for such a worthwhile cause is commendable to say the least.
To simulate what it's like to be homeless, the youth stayed in cardboard boxes for the night. They were allowed three items, just like a real homeless person. The youth decorated their boxes with facts about homelessness in the US. They then received a simple meal of soup, sandwiches, water, and protein bars. Two speakers also attended the event: Michael Brandon and Zach Cleghorn – both formerly homeless. A prayer service was held at the First Christian Church labyrinth and there were fire pits, music, and other activities for the Youth throughout the night.
On the 6th of June, 2017 Community Crossroads Center was presented with a check for $7,000. This was money that was raised by the “Salt and Light” youth group at First Christian through their “Out of the Box” event. That is an incredible accomplishment. Not only because of the amount of money, but because the youth group has made a difference.Thank you very much “Salt and Light” and thank you First Christian for leading our future men and women on the right path.
