Recently we have been trying to connect with the younger generation of the Greenville community by visiting college classes, including a local service-learning class taught by Dr. Guiseppe Getto. As part of his visit, Bob Williams discussed homelessness and the recent renovations to the center.Mr. Williams presented some statistics and background on homelessness in the city of Greenville North Carolina. He explained to the students the costs associated with housing one homeless person per night, which is around twenty-five dollars. With an average of 50-75 homeless occupants per night at twenty-five dollars a night, the expenses add up quickly from $1,250-$1,875. This includes giving them a place to sleep, shower and meals for breakfast and dinner. The facility is a dry shelter and occupants are breathalyzed each night upon entry. They wake up at 5:30 AM to do chores around the facility, and they can watch TV until 10:30 PM and then it is lights out for everyone. A lot of the money raised for the center is through donations due to the fact that the city and county do not fund Community Crossroads. Raising awareness about homelessness helps our organization grow a strong reputation around the community. We hope to raise money and feed the homeless through donations.
