It started with a heartwarming relationship between an artist and a local homeless man. It all started with a heartwarming relationship between a local North Carolina Artist, William (Bill) Mangum, and a homeless man, Mike Saavedra. The two met in 1987 and Mike has changed Bill’s perspective on life forever.William Mangum is a local North Carolina artist who admired the natural beauty of his home state, North Carolina. He has been recognized both nationally and internationally for his works of art. Mr. Mangum has created many paintings of landscapes and other sceneries highlighting urban, rural, and other environmental attractions. After developing such a strong bond with Mike and even inviting him into his home, Mike’s story gave Bill an idea on how he would use his artistic talent to help those of the less fortunate. Mangum started an annual campaign in 1988 called, the Honor Card, where he incorporates his art into the holiday season to raise awareness and funds for homelessness. Since the launch, Magnum has been able to raise over 5 million dollars in donations. The Community Crossroads Center has partaken in this campaign for the past 14 years and has personally raised $162,707.00. Each year there is a new Honor Card released. This year is no different.
